Arcadis has been appointed lead designer for the detailed design phase of Roberts Bank Terminal 2, a major port development set to increase the Port of Vancouver’s container capacity by 50 per cent and strengthen Canada’s Pacific Gateway.
Arcadis, a global provider of sustainable design, engineering, and consultancy solutions, has been selected as lead designer for the detailed design phase of the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 Project.
The appointment follows the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority’s selection of TerraMarine as the preferred proponent for the project’s progressive design-build contract.
Once completed, Roberts Bank Terminal 2 will expand the Port of Vancouver’s container capacity by 50 percent. The development is expected to reinforce Canada’s Pacific Gateway and contribute to a more resilient and reliable supply chain.
The project will also support the country’s ability to export locally manufactured goods and produce to international markets. In doing so, it is expected to unlock more than USD$100 billion in annual trade capacity whilst delivering significant long-term economic benefits.
MULTIDISCIPLINARY DESIGN EXPERTISE
Arcadis will lead the project’s multidisciplinary design as a member of TerraMarine, a consortium comprising FlatironDragados Canada Inc., Van Oord Canada Ltd., Aecon Constructors, and Carlson Construction Group Inc.
During the detailed design phase, Arcadis will draw on its expertise across several areas of engineering and infrastructure development.
Its responsibilities will include coastal and mooring studies, alongside geotechnical design and engineering covering ground modelling and seismic performance assessments. The company will also undertake marine structures design for the main container wharf and berths.
Further responsibilities will encompass environmental permitting support and civil works for the landmass and wharf. This will include widening the causeway that connects the terminal to land.

COLLABORATION AT THE CORE
Arcadis will work alongside TerraMarine, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, local First Nations, and project partners throughout the project’s multi-phased design-build process.
The collaboration will focus on advancing a design that is innovative, climate-resilient, and constructible. Arcadis will also work with key sub-consultants to combine local knowledge with internationally recognised expertise spanning marine engineering, environmental planning, geotechnical design, and major infrastructure delivery.
Stantec Consulting Ltd. will provide environmental planning, permitting, and Indigenous engagement support, whilst TYPSA Inc. will deliver specialised design for the project’s concrete caissons, which will form the terminal wharf.
Meanwhile, Tetra Tech Canada Inc. will support geotechnical engineering, drawing on its experience delivering complex infrastructure projects across British Columbia.
EXPANDING MARINE INFRASTRUCTURE
The Roberts Bank Terminal 2 project adds to Arcadis’ portfolio of major marine and port infrastructure developments around the world.
This includes the ongoing Westport Program in Western Australia. Through its international capabilities in coastal engineering, marine structures, and complex waterfront projects, Arcadis is continuing to focus on infrastructure designed to strengthen trade and support economic growth.
