Telecom giant Telefónica expands Eco Smart portfolio as businesses turn to digital tools for decarbonisation.

The growing role of digitalisation

Telefónica says its digital products and services helped customers avoid 19.2 million tonnes of CO₂e emissions in 2025, underlining the growing role of digitalisation in corporate sustainability strategies.

The company reports the emissions savings were delivered through its Eco Smart and business connectivity solutions, with projects implemented for customers in Spain, Brazil and Germany.

According to Telefónica, the figure represents a 10.34% increase compared with the previous year.

Certified digital tools support business decarbonisation

Telefónica said more than half of its B2B sustainability-focused product portfolio has now received third-party certification.

The company reported that 57% of its B2B portfolio has been verified by AENOR as Eco Smart, a certification designed to recognise products and services that can help businesses reduce their carbon footprint.

The Eco Smart label is intended to make it easier for organisations to identify digital solutions with measurable environmental benefits.

Digital technology positioned as a decarbonisation enabler

Telefónica said connectivity and digital technology are playing an increasingly important role in helping organisations meet climate targets.

“Connectivity and technology are key enablers in the transition towards a decarbonised economy. At Telefónica, we integrate sustainability into our value proposition, developing digital solutions with the potential to generate a positive environmental impact that help our customers reduce their emissions, optimise resources and move responsibly towards their climate goals,” says Maya Ormazabal, Global Chief Sustainability Officer at Telefónica.

Eco Smart strategy targets multiple industries

The company said its Eco Smart offering has become a central part of decarbonisation strategies across sectors including:

  • Industry
  • Logistics
  • Retail
  • Mobility
  • Public services

Telefónica’s sustainability-focused digital tools include solutions for smart connectivity, advanced analytics, energy management and optimisation, and remote working.

These are supported by technologies including IoT, cloud, big data and 5G.

Resource efficiency and reduced travel drive emissions savings

According to Telefónica, adoption of these technologies can help businesses lower emissions by:

  • Reducing resource consumption
  • Optimising operational processes
  • Cutting travel requirements

The company said these factors are contributing to emissions reductions on a global scale.

Digitalisation seen as core to the green transition

Telefónica said digitalisation will continue to be a structural part of the transition to a lower-carbon economy.

The company stated that the emissions-saving potential of digital technologies is expected to increase in the coming years, reinforcing the role of technology in climate action.

Telefónica added that combining sustainability and technology has become an increasingly important factor in competitiveness and economic development.

Wider research highlights digital climate opportunity

The company is also pointing to broader industry research showing the wider climate potential of digital technologies.

According to studies cited by Telefónica, including the Exponential Roadmap and World Economic Forum analyses, digital solutions could reduce global emissions by up to 15% in sectors such as energy, industry, transport and agriculture.

That figure could rise to 35% when accounting for digital technology’s ability to transform habits and consumption patterns by 2030.

Sustainability and technology strategies continue to converge

Telefónica’s latest figures reflect how telecom and technology providers are increasingly positioning digital infrastructure as a tool for environmental progress.

As businesses seek practical ways to cut emissions while improving efficiency, certified digital sustainability solutions are becoming a growing part of enterprise climate strategies.
