DP World is rolling out a new carbon inset initiative across Belgium, Portugal and Sweden, aiming to help ocean freight customers reduce Scope 3 emissions across key European trade lanes.

How the Insetify programme works

The trial, called Insetify, will begin on 1 April and automatically apply carbon inset credits to qualifying shipments, marking a broader push to embed decarbonisation directly within supply chain operations rather than relying on traditional offsetting.

Under the scheme, customers using DP World’s ocean freight forwarding services in the three countries will receive carbon inset credits each quarter, provided they ship at least 25 TEUs.

Credits are calculated at 100 kg of CO2e per TEU. For example, a shipper moving 50 TEUs in a quarter would receive credits equivalent to 5 tonnes of CO2e. Notably, the credits are applied at no additional cost during the trial period.

Unlike carbon offsets, which typically fund external environmental projects, insets are generated within the logistics value chain itself. In this case, emissions reductions come from the use of lower-carbon fuels and more efficient transport within DP World’s shipping operations.

What it means for supply chains

The trial reflects a growing shift among logistics providers toward tackling Scope 3 emissions—often the largest and most complex part of a company’s carbon footprint.

By embedding emissions reductions directly into freight services, DP World is offering customers a more immediate and measurable way to decarbonise supply chains, particularly across ocean freight, where residual emissions remain high.

John Trenchard, VP – Sustainable International Supply Chains, Europe, said the initiative is designed to complement broader decarbonisation strategies:

“Providing customers with multiple solutions to enable the decarbonisation of supply chains is important to DP World.

“The Insetify trial allows for a pragmatic approach to managing these residual emissions as part of a longer-term, holistic plan.”

The programme will also include sustainability training to help customers better understand and manage supply chain emissions.

Building on existing UK carbon initiatives

The European trial builds on DP World’s carbon inset programme already in place at its UK ports, including Southampton and London Gateway.

Launched in January 2025, the UK initiative has handled more than 250,000 TEUs and issued over 9,000 tonnes of CO2e in carbon inset credits, suggesting early demand for embedded decarbonisation solutions within freight services.

Expansion supports wider European logistics strategy

The rollout of Insetify also aligns with DP World’s broader expansion of freight forwarding capabilities across Europe.

In Belgium, the programme leverages the company’s integrated operations in Antwerp, combining port terminals, chemical hubs and forwarding services.

Geert Verhoeven Vertical Lead – Chemicals Europe said: “The launch of Insetify in Belgium leverages DP World’s extensive operations in Antwerp, combining a long-standing freight forwarding office with port terminal and chemical hub capabilities to deliver integrated, end-to-end supply chain solutions.”

In Portugal, it builds on recent investment in a European Control Tower and a new freight forwarding branch in Porto, aimed at improving end-to-end visibility.

Silvio Sousa, Branch Manager Freight Forwarding Portugal, said: “The launch of Insetify builds on DP World’s growing presence in Portugal, following the opening of its European Control Tower and freight forwarding branch in Porto last year, strengthening end-to-end supply chain visibility and managed services for international customers.”

Meanwhile, in Sweden, the trial coincides with new offices in Stockholm and Gothenburg as part of a wider push into the Scandinavian market. The company has also outlined plans to shift up to 25% of shipments to rail and sea in its first year of operations, alongside fully digital documentation processes.

Bojan Knightly Country Manager Sweden, Freight Forwarding said: “The launch of the Insetify trial will coincide with the opening of DP World’s new Stockholm and Gothenburg offices, which were recently announced as part of DP World’s landmark freight forwarding expansion into Scandinavia. Supporting DP World’s global net zero by 2050 ambition, DP World Sweden is also aiming to offer up to 25% of shipments via rail and sea in the first operational year to reduce road emissions and 100% e-documentation and online invoicing to eliminate paper processes.”
